There are two ways MOSFETs work. The first is known as depletion mode. When there is no voltage on the gate, the channel exhibits maximum conduction. The second way a MOSFET works is called enhancement mode. When there is no voltage on the gate, there is effectively no channel and the device does not conduct. The channel is created by applying a voltage to the gate. The higher the gate voltage, the better the conductivity of the device.
