ACANTHUS \nspinosus \nCommonly known as Bear's Breeches. \nThis clump forming perennial is often used as a architectural plant but is equally effective as a speciment in a mixed border. \nPlants form large mound shaped rosettes of attractive, dark green, glossy, leathery leaves with finely cut edges and each tipped with a sharp spine. \nThe stylish shape of Acanthus spinosus leaves are frequently used as the decorative or ornamental detail on Corinthian columns thus bringing a hint of classical elegance and sophistication to the garden. \nFrom late spring spectacular spikes of white flowers with purple bracts rise from the foliage, these racemes of flowers, often over 1m. tall last several weeks and from a distance resemble tall foxgloves. \nAlthough it will grow in full sun (the leaves may suffer from scorch) Acanthus prefers dappled or partial shade. \nNeeds plenty of room to grow and once established is extremely difficult to move so correct positioning is vitally important. \nBeware of slugs and snails, the love Acanthus. \nDramatic when planted in gravel beds. \nRoyal Horticultural Society Award of Garden Merit (AGM). \nAll pictures used are for illustration only and may not necessarily reflect the plants at all times of the year. \nOur plants of Acanthus spinosus are supplied ex. 9cm pots.
